Wisdom Teeth Removal

The first step in the wisdom teeth removal process is making an appointment with us. During that initial consultation, we will take x-rays and use specialized imaging tools to get a clear picture of the positioning of your wisdom teeth. The information we gather will give us a clear picture of the work that needs to be done.

We have 4 convenient locations in Central Florida for wisdom teeth extractions including: South Orlando, East Orlando, Kissimmee, and Winter Garden.

The Best Experience Possible

We are committed to making your experience great! And thanks to rapidly advancing technology, new medicines, sterilization and infection control options, Dr. Morales, Dr. Shaikh, Dr. Alicea, and Dr. Antonos are able to perform the wisdom teeth removal procedure in a way that promotes quicker healing and minimizes pain.

What to Expect

Prior to your wisdom teeth extraction surgery, we will send you home with very specific pre and post-surgical instructions so that you know what to expect.

A few key items for before the surgery:

  • Food: No eating or drinking the day of your procedure except for pre-approved medications which may be taken with a sip of water.
  • Adult: Bring a parent or responsible adult. We will not be able to release you alone.
  • Anesthesia: Most people prefer to be sedated for the procedure, and we offer a variety of levels of anesthesia to accommodate personal preferences. We are trained and highly experienced with anesthesia, and providing you with a safe and comfortable experience is our top priority.

A few key items for after the surgery:

  • Numbness: You will feel sleepy for the remainder of the day, and you may have numbness in the jaw and possibly a sensation of your gums feeling swollen and pulling away from your teeth. This is a common part of the healing process.
  • Food: Start with clear liquids and slowly progress to soft foods. Avoid dairy products the first day, as they tend to interact with anesthesia, sometimes causing nausea.
  • No straws: Throughout the healing period, you may not use straws (or tobacco). Using straws can dislodge the clot that is covering your extraction site, resulting in a very painful condition called dry socket.
  • Pain medications: Make sure you have any over-the-counter or prescription pain medications ready to go for when the anesthesia starts to wear off at home.

The Wisdom Teeth Procedure

The length of your surgery depends on a variety of factors, including the level of impaction of your teeth and the number of teeth being removed.

Typically, most wisdom teeth extractions are performed in about an hour during which you will be kept comfortable with anesthesia.

Post-op Recovery

Soreness after surgery can be managed with over-the-counter medications, but we will discuss with you all medication options before your surgery to ensure that you have adequate pain relief at home as the anesthesia wears off.

Wisdom Teeth Complications

Thankfully, complications following wisdom teeth removal are rare and largely avoidable. However, if you suspect any of these issues, please call us for instructions:

A visual of dry socket that developed after the removal of wisdom teeth

Dry Sockets:

Dry sockets are the most common complication following a tooth extraction, and they can occur when the blood clot in an extraction site becomes dislodged or never develops properly. This complication can result from smoking and straw use, improper home-care, such as vigorous rinsing, and unknown infections. If you have symptoms of dry socket, please call our office immediately so that we can help manage your pain and properly care for you. Dry socket symptoms normally appear several days after your surgery and may include:

  • Significant pain.
  • Pain radiating to the ear, cheek, etc.
  • Bad breath or unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Visible bone or an empty-looking socket.

You may be developing an infection if you have a fever, worsening pain and swelling.

A representation of numbness caused by damage to a sensory nerve

Damage to Sensory Nerve:

It is normal to feel some numbness or tingling in the lower lip, chin or tongue following a wisdom teeth extraction. However, very rarely, sensory nerve damage occurs that causes the sensation to stay permanently. Having your wisdom teeth out while you are young (before the age of 18) lessens the likelihood that this condition will develop—another reason to take care of this important procedure during the teen years!

A diagram showing the opening that can occur between your mouth and sinuses

Sinus Communication:

Because the upper wisdom teeth are so close to the sinus cavities, an opening can develop between the sinuses and the mouth following an extraction. This “hole” will usually close on its own, provided that you follow specific instructions (avoid blowing your nose, sneeze with your mouth open) to avoid a pressure buildup in the sinuses. In rare cases, we must perform an additional procedure to close the opening.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost?

Every patient’s situation is different, which is why we have a consultation with you prior to the surgery and evaluate the positioning of your wisdom teeth and how many need to be removed. This information allows us to present you with all possible costs upfront.

The following factors may affect the cost of wisdom teeth extraction:

  • Anesthesia Used
  • Dental Imaging
  • Number of Teeth Extracted
  • Level of Impaction

Does insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?

Many dental insurance policies do include wisdom teeth removal in their benefits. Our staff will help you navigate your insurance policy so that you can obtain the maximum benefit from your provider.

The Cost of NOT Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

While the cost of wisdom teeth extraction may seem prohibitive, the price of not having them removed may cost more money (and pain) in the future, as extractions get more and more complicated with age.

Financing the Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal

A quick phone call to our office will help you understand the financing options available to you. We offer a variety of options to our patients and their families to ensure that they get the care that they need.

My son, who is 15 recently had his wisdom teeth extracted. He was very nervous about having the procedure, and everyone on the staff was friendly and caring. Dr. Morales was kind and thorough in explaining the process. Feeling like he was cared about, my son and I felt better about a procedure that we were both nervous about. Everyone was friendly and took time to answer our questions. Thank you for a positive experience!

This was my first trip to the office (East Orlando). I didn't have my surgical experience yet, but the consultation was great. The wait time was very short, the Dr. explained the process in a way I could understand. Sofia was the best. She is such an asset to the office. She really took her time explaining things to me. From scheduling, to pre surgical instructions as well as insurance. Sofia made everything seem so easy. She was able to answer all my questions in great detail. What I most appreciated was how she worked with me on the scheduling. Time was of the essence for me and she was able to make it happen!

Our 15 year old daughter had her 4 wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Shaikh. Both Dr. Shikh and Nurse Sara took excellent care of our daughter. The procedure was clearly explained to us at the consultation. We received specific post-care instructions which mirrored their website information. We were very relieved that our daughter was only receiving "Twighlight sedation". We were able to be with our daughter up until the procedure began. They had the appropriate monitoring equipment in place. Dr. Shaikh is also an MD and Board Certified in the use of Anesthesia. This is critically important. Our daughter did not experience any significant swelling...she did have an ice pack on her face once we got home. Rotating 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. The next day she was fine, as if nothing had happened. She went back to school on Monday. We are extremely pleased with the care that our daughter received. We would definitely return to OraFacial for a dental procedure and recommend them to family and friends. Thank you!

For wisdom teeth removal, this was a quick and orderly operation. I received many calls in the upcoming days to my operation where questions were sorted out appropriately. I didn't have to wait long and Dr. Morales did an incredible job. Highly recommended!

Patient Review by Dr. E

My younger son had four wisdom teeth removed on 3 July 2015. He had no problems whatsoever from the procedure. My older son had four wisdom teeth removed on 22 July 2015. I have nothing but words of praise, gratitude and awe for Dr. Zakir Shaikh and his staff. This office has to be in the running for the number one orafacial and dental implant surgery office in Orlando, possibly central Florida. On any standard or criteria of assessment, the office and its associated healthcare professionals rank exemplary. Dr. Shaikh is a humble, modest, caring, and skilled medical professional. Moreover, not only is he a skilled oral surgeon, he is a Board certified medical doctor as well. For me, that provided added assurance that my sons were in good hands for their oral surgery and its associated IV sedation. I highly recommend Dr. Shaikh and his staff. My sons are both doing well, post-operative, and our family is grateful. Thank you Dr. Shaikh, Brittany, and Joanna (attending during procedures) for your outstanding and professional care.

Patient Review by Bernard S

Great Place! Took my daughter to Dr. Zakir Shaikh to remove all 4 wisdom teeth in July. I was expecting her to be in a lot of pain after the surgery specially with all the horror stories that I had heard others to have gone through. But to my surprise she was in little pain and was back to normal the next day with minimal need of taking any pain pills. The office also called the same day to check on her and answer any questions that we might have, even though they answered all the questions prior to procedure. I will definitely recommend Dr. Shaikh and his office to any body who is in need of skilled Oral Surgeon as he was extremely caring and a true professional in his field, and that is sometimes very hard to find nowadays.Thank you Dr. Shaikh.

We were referred to Orofacial & Dental Implant Surgery by Premiere Orthodontics, Waterford Lakes, and Dr. Jason Battle. It is clear that the quality of care our family has received from Dr. Battle and his team is well replicated by Dr. Zakir Shaikh and his staff. It is comforting to know that such caring professionals are attending to the dental/orthodontic/orofacial surgery needs of my family. We had the opportunity to interact with Sylvia (front desk), Sara (intake), Joanna (attending), Jessica (Finance), and Dr. Zakir Shaikh. We were pleased all around.

Patient Review by Christopher D

I was very nervous about having 2 of my wisdom teeth removed this week, but the staff quickly put me at ease. I found the nurse to be very kind and comforting. I'd also like to recognize Dr. Shaikh, because only after one day of surgery I have very little pain/discomfort and minimal swelling. A credit to his experience and skill as a surgeon. I would whole heartedly recommend your office to my friends and family. Well done!
